Myanmar: visa on arrival or e-Visa?

On October 21, 2010, Burma changed its name to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. Located in southeast Asia, the country is a destination that, in addition to being very affordable, invites you to adventure. To get there, you will need to obtain a Burmese visa, which is intended to be easier to obtain to attract more tourists. We'll tell you about the different ways to get it.

The classic visa

To obtain a traditional visa, you will need to go to the Myanmar consulate in Paris. This visa is valid for a period of 3 months. However, you will only be able to stay for 28 days on Burmese soil.

Before you begin the visa application process, you will need to ensure that your passport is valid for the next six months and that you have at least three pages free. These pages will be used to receive the visa stamp as well as two other stamps, for entry and exit from Myanmar.

You will need to attach:

  • your passport
  • a duly completed visa application form
  • 2 ID photos
  • a photocopy of your return ticket.

Be sure to include a stamped request letter if you send your application by post. The delivery time is normally two days after receipt of the file by the consulate.

Visa on arrival

You can also apply for a visa which you will receive once you arrive in Myanmar. This saves you a lot of hassle when it comes to transmitting your file since it is done exclusively online.

To do this, go to the Myanmar embassy website and look for the “Visa on arrival” section to submit your file. The content of the file is indicated on the site and does not differ much from the content of the physical file for obtaining a classic visa. To this file, you will make a payment of 48 € consular fees using one of the payment methods indicated. Once the deadline has passed (normally three days), you should receive a letter of approval and a form. These documents should be printed out and presented to the authorities once you arrive at the airport in Myanmar for stamping.

If you opt for a visa on arrival, remember to set the destination of your ticket to one of the following three airports:

  • Nay Pyi Taw International Airport
  • Mandalay International Airport
  • Yangon International Airport

These are the 3 airports that accept visa on arrival to enter Myanmar.

Visa

Allowing entry through the same airports as the visa on arrival, the electronic visa remains another method of obtaining a visa to travel to Myanmar. It is also the most practical. The visa is valid for three months and allows a tourist stay of 28 days like the other two types of visas. What differentiates it from the other two is its application and obtaining process which happens 100 % online.

To do this you will only be asked:

  • A passport valid for another 6 months after your entry into Myanmar
  • a ID photo
  • the completed visa application form

The request is validated after 3 days and allows you to obtain a printable visa. The e-visa is therefore the simplest alternative to easily obtain your visa for Myanmar.
